I am one of those people who buys most of the families clothing at the end of the season clearance sales guessing that my kids will be one size up the next year. I'd much rather spend $2-$3 on a pair of shorts that will end up with a popsicle stain in them the first day than $10-$15. I'm lucky enough to have two girls so if a clothing item never fits one child there is a good chance it will fit the other. The hardest part is getting the kids to try on a bunch of clothes all at once rather than each time we buy them. Plus they still have to try on last years school clothes.
I tried letting them watch TV while they tried them on, I attempted to make it a race, I even asked them to try on only one a day but nothing worked until I instituted the "Fall Fashion Show" last year. Now my kids are begging to try on clothes and put together outfits for the show. It doesn't take much. We slide the couch back a bit to make a runway, put on some music, and cheer as each outfit comes down the catwalk. Its fun, it helps the girls develop their own sense of style, it makes getting ready in the morning much easier, and it is another way to get excited about the new school year!
